Janis: Little Girl Blue (2015) | Documentary
“If I hold back, I’m no good. I’m no good. I’d rather be good sometimes, than holding back all the time.” Four decades after her untimely demise, Janis Joplin is as big as ever. Despite releasing only four albums during her life, Janis’ legacy extends to more than 15 greatest hits collections, reissues and live albums have been released posthumously. Yet for all the accolades and stardom she’s earned over the years-both during her lifetime and posthumously- it’s staggering to think how much Janis suffered, how deeply she hurt, during her short life.
Prophet's Prey (2015) | SHOWTIME Documentary
The twin towns of Colorado City, AZ and Hildale, UT are, at first glance, quaint. Little girls in prairie dresses and little boys in button up shirts follow their mothers to the stores. The men, in their shiny, turbo-charged pickups have a reputation as some of the best contractors around. The center of town life, as it is in most Mormon communities, is the Meeting House. Every Sunday, the whole town meets to listen to the words of their spiritual leader, Warren Jeffs calling from the correctional facility in Texas where he’s serving a life sentence for marrying – and raping – two girls under the age of 15. Prophet’s Prey is the story of Warren Jeff’s tyrannical rule over the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints, and the near-decade long investigation that brought Jeffs to justice – but was unable to remove him from power. In association with Jon Krakauer and Imagine Entertainment.
West of Memphis (2013) | Documentary
A powerful documentary by filmmaker Amy Berg, WEST OF MEMPHIS tells the story of the West Memphis Three. The film chronicles the recent investigation that ultimately broke the case open and led to the freedom of three innocent men. WEST OF MEMPHIS starts with a searing examination of the police investigation into the 1993 murders of three eight-year-old boys in the small town of West Memphis, Arkansas. The film goes on to reveal hitherto unknown evidence surrounding the arrest and conviction of the other three victims of this shocking crime: teenagers Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, who were imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. The film goes on to reveal personal insight into Echols’ eighteen years on death row and the fight to save his life. With Berg’s unprecedented access to the inner workings of the defense, the film shows the investigation, research, and appeals process in a way that has never been seen before. WEST OF MEMPHIS reveals shocking and disturbing new information about a case that still haunts the American South. (Produced by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Damien Echols, and Lorri Davis)
Deliver Us from Evil (2006) | Documentary
Directed by Amy Berg, DELIVER US FROM EVIL is an Academy Award-nominated documentary about Catholic Priest and serial child molester, Father Oliver O’Grady. The film chronicles Father O’Grady’s years as a priest in Northern California, where he used his position in the church to gain the trust of his victims and their families. During these years, O’Grady raped and molested dozens of children. For decades, the Catholic Church actively attempted to cover up O’Grady’s crimes, relocating him to various parishes around the United States. In 1993, O’Grady was convicted on four counts of “lewd and lascivious acts” and served seven years in a California State Penitentiary. He was then deported back to his native Ireland.
